Super 3 Research Skills (K-2)

Super 3 Research Skills

The Super 3 is a research model designed to be used by students in the lower grades (K-2). Similar to the Big 6 method, it guides inquiry by a series of questions.

What are the three steps?

1. Plan
2. Do
3. Review

Plan

This step allows you to begin planning your work. Ask yourself the following questions when planning:

  • What am I supposed to do?

  • What will it look like if I do a really good job?

  • What do I need to make to show what I learned?

  • What do I need to find out about in order to do a good job?

Do

This step occurs in the middle of your activity. This is when you read, view, tell, write, create pictures, etc. Make sure to take notes during this step. Ask yourself the following questions when "doing" your activity or project:

  • How can I do the job?

  • What can I use to find what I need?

  • How can I use what I have learned to make something that will help me solve a problem or explain what I have learned?

For younger students, using a note-taking or data sheet is advised. These allow students to fill in information as they research or read without having to struggle with complete sentences and trains of thoughts. Here is an example of a basic data sheet (just make sure there is a place to cite a source):

Research Data Sheet

Review

This step occurs at the end of your activity. You will review your work at this point. Ask yourself the following questions when reviewing:

  • Is my job done?

  • Did I do what I was supposed to do?

  • Do I feel good about my product?

  • Should I change or add anything before I turn it in?

Here is a song to help teachers and students remember the Super 3 steps. (Sung to the tune of "Bingo")

Here is a process I can use, Its name is Super3-0!
Plan, do, and review; Plan, do, and review; Plan, do, and review; Its name is Super3-0!

First I plan what I will do, And look for what I need-o.
Plan, do, and review; Plan, do, and review; Plan, do, and review; Its name is Super3-0!

Next I use what I have found, And show what I have learned-o.
Plan, do, and review; Plan, do, and review; Plan, do, and review; Its name is Super3-0!

Finally I review my work And make sure it’s my best-o.
Plan, do, and review; Plan, do, and review; Plan, do, and review; Its name is Super3-0!
